NSFW Platforms: Intro – Dilemma, Solutions & Artistic Freedom

I’ve been wondering constantly about friendly NSFW platforms where artists can thrive without being threatened for dumb things by giant corporations. In this compiled chapter, I will be discussing the dilemma, the alternatives, and warning about the TOS of each site for NSFW artists’ convenience.

@bloodywing’s discussion of the updated post about platforms allowing NSFW.

Inspiration For An Investigation

I came across 2 particular NSFW art blogs from: @HBeats and @bloodywing. Their research for complex business techniques, alternatives based on experiences, and the artistic endeavor to carter the NSFW community due to growth challenges are outstanding.

Hypocrisy Of The Giant Corporations & Their Partnership

Recently, Visa and Mastercard targeted game platforms (Steam, Valve, and Itchio.io) by pressuring them with strict policies to remove games containing NSFW, otherwise they would terminate their payment processing services due to “reputation risk”.

The culprit behind this plan was Collective Shout, an Australian movement that claims “challenging the objectification of women and sexualization of girls in media”. The most ironic part is how these entities are seeking surveillance, power, and control by:

  1. Dictating what we can consume based on their superior morals and ethics, regardless of whether it’s legal content.
  2. Advocating for protection, but provides a partnership with one of the most notorious platforms, involving numerous cases of exploitation.
  3. Having questionable opinions and double standards about whether the fictional material is harmless, although it involves minors.
  4. Generalizing consumers as “abusers” because they go against their authoritarian mindset.
  5. Suppressing the artistic freedom because any slight trace of violence or sexualization in a fictional material is “illegal”, regardless of whether it is a vital key to the storytelling.
  6. And lastly, doesn’t care if it consequently jeopardizes any NSFW creators who contribute in the same genre for a decent living.

How It Used To Be

I remember how friendly Patreon was back then to the NSFW community, and suddenly, well-known marketplaces such as Gumroad no longer allowed sexually explicit content. Unfortunately, Patreon is complicated with its rules. In their “Community Guidelines: Sexual Gratification“, they explicitly demand that all content, regardless of whether real or fictional, must provide a consent context. For fictional works, my questions would be:

  • Is it necessary that each artwork I post must have a consent context?
  • What if someone wants to avoid spoilers of vital information or key plot in their story?
  • Is it obligatory for artworks that depict anything but human characters that lack any rights (ex. machines, objects, monsters, etc.) to admit consent?

To what degree are we responsible for the blurred lines perception of the viewers between fiction and reality?

My Objectives

  1. Provide a list of web hostings, subscription platforms, streaming platforms, and communities user-friendly or at least allow NSFW content.
  2. Show visual contents and updated content from these service providers for a better understanding of their objectives and accurate info.
  3. Document comparisons between the pros and cons of using their services based on their terms and conditions.

NOTE: I want to emphasize that this post is for educational purposes. A 90% of the information was based on my experience handling their platforms and/or reading their TOS; the remaining percent is based on the AI Overview (if no information was available in their TOS or website) or forum discussions. Be aware that some information can be outdated due to unexpected/recent changes from these platforms. I encourage you to conduct your own investigations in addition to reading my blog.

Conclusion

Yes, I’m aware that questionable intentions, disturbing fictional content, and unhinged people exist, but it’s ridiculous to punish the whole community for those who practiced their artistic freedom responsibly. There are bigger fish to fry; instead of wasting time dictating and censoring what fictional pixels we can consume. We deserve spaces where we can grow as a community, share our interests, and thrive with our creations.
